This post is part of a series detailing my 2022 coast to coast cycling adventure.

Day 8 was challenging (100 miles and 4,000 ft), beautiful (đź’™ Idaho!), and without incident for a change. It was also the first day of 300 miles in three days.

Day 8 Highlights:

Song of the day: The Wheel by Todd Rundgren
Start: Mountain Home, ID
End: Cary, ID
Distance: 100.0 miles
Elevation: 3,927 ft
Breakfast: Provided the evening before by the awesome Mountain Home Inn staff
Lunch: Musher’s Mug in Fairfield, ID – highly recommended
Dinner: Potluck from our traveling cooler

Progress so far: 679.2 miles, 23,242 ft climbed.

Here are all the details:

The big question for the day was would Dave be able to ride after yesterday’s unplanned communion with the pavement. His road rash is healing nicely. But I imagine that if he had gone to see a doctor, they would have said “Dave, I recommend you take it easy for a few days.” Instead he rode a century through the mountains, climbing 4,000 ft, to over 5,000 ft elevation. Clearly his body was diverting energy to healing but he’s a tough bastard and he completed all 100 miles.

Also, my “flat” from yesterday is holding air nicely after simply pumping more air into the tubeless tire. Yay for new bike tech.

Not too much to write about today (and I’m damn tired) so I’ll let the pictures tell the story.

Remnants of the Jackson School, which part of was part of Rattlesnake Station on the Oregon Trail
Musher’s Mug makes amazing breakfast burritos
Central Idaho is just stunning. The mountains are much more rugged than the more gently rounded mountains in eastern Oregon.
